How to Submit Excel Reports to HMRC under Making Tax Digital (MTD)
June 8, 2026 • 5 min read
You've categorized your transactions in Censitio and exported your Excel report. Now what? Here's how to submit that data to HMRC under Making Tax Digital (MTD).
The Short Answer
Excel files are highly useful for UK Making Tax Digital (MTD), but they cannot be used on their own. Because Excel lacks the required direct connection to HMRC, you must use MTD-compatible bridging software or plug-ins to digitally submit your tax data.
How Excel Works with MTD
You can continue to record and organize your income and expenses in a spreadsheet. To meet HMRC's MTD rules, you must do the following:
- Maintain Digital Links: The flow of data must be entirely digital. Manual retyping or "copy and pasting" figures from Excel into another system is explicitly prohibited.
- Use Bridging Software: You connect your Excel file to an approved bridging application. This software reads the figures in your specified spreadsheet cells and securely submits them directly to HMRC via their API.
Benefits of Using Excel for MTD
- Familiarity & Control: You can maintain your current bookkeeping processes without learning complex accounting packages.
- Cost-Effective: Bridging software subscriptions are generally much cheaper than full accounting software platforms like Xero or QuickBooks.
- Multiple Income Streams: You can easily calculate and separate complex income streams (like multiple properties or various self-employed trades).
Censitio + Bridging Software = Complete Workflow
Your step-by-step workflow:
- Export CSV from your bank
- Import into Censitio and categorize transactions
- Export HMRC-ready Excel summary
- Use bridging software to submit to HMRC
Common HMRC-Recognized Bridging Options
Several software providers are approved by HMRC to connect Excel data to the MTD gateway:
- VitalTax: Integrates seamlessly as an Excel add-in without requiring a specific template.
- Absolute Excel Filer: Links your existing business spreadsheets to HMRC systems for quarterly updates and Self Assessment.
- Easy MTD: A Windows-based bridging application that imports .xlsx, .xls, and .csv files.
Is this approach right for you?
If you're unsure whether bridging software is ideal for your situation, consider:
- Is your tax obligation for VAT or Income Tax (ITSA)?
- Are you already tracking your transactions digitally in an Excel file?
Censitio handles the categorization piece – we'll leave the filing to specialized bridging software.
